教えていただいたサイトを読んでみたところ、まさにこの問題でした。

Matt Smith 氏は div に position: relative; を指定してありましたが、
私の場合 div ではなく、中の dl に position: relative; を指定して
この症状に対処していました。

どういう条件で起きるのか突き止められず気持ちが悪かったのですが
Matt Smith の記述を教えていただけてとても参考になりました。
